Hey guys i have a home lab with 2 2600 and 3 2500 routers. i have configure all my serial interfaces using my laptop and a console cable. I have the vty lines setup for telnet and my question is what type of cable i would use for my telnet connection? and do i have to set a static ip on the laptop and set DHCP on the ethernet port on the router that i have the laptop connected to?
Also lets say i have the laptop plug into router1. will i be able to telnet into all of my routers from that one connection?
Thank You

hypnotoad Banned Posts: 915if you have the VTY's set up correctly, with password, you should be able to telnet in to the device based on IP -- the kind of cable shouldn't matter. Set DHCP on your laptop (assuming you have a DHCP device) and set static IPs on your router's interfaces, then telnet to the IP of the interface you want to manage it from.
After you're in one router, you should be able to telnet in to the others (assuming all your routes are correct and your vty's are correct). -

im not the most experienced person here but heres wot i would say
you need to have your routers correctly configured can cabled up correctly for example
laptop === router ==== router ==== laptop
with crossover cables connecting from the laptop to the ethernet port on the router and a serial connection from the serial interface to the serial interface on the other router.
you will need to correctly add the ip addresses to the workstation and to the router
If you are going to using several routers you will need to use a routing protocol of some sort i would have thought RIP would be fine for this however other people on here may suggest something different
With it set up and cabled you should be able to telnet using the "telnet ......." in privilaged exec mode
im sorry if i havent explained it very well any more questions feel free to contact me
