Does it happen with all games or just a specific game or two?

I'd start by updating my video and sound drivers and updating the game to the latest patch.

First, run memtest86 and make sure that memory is ok, as that seems to be the most likely point of failure if it is happening only in games. Boot to the recovery console and run a chkdsk /p and see if it reports any errors. If it reports uncorrectable errors then check the health of the hard drive, it could be failing though sometimes a format and reinstall can save things. If correctable errors then boot into windows, get rid of the page file, go back to the recovery console and run a chkdsk /r, then restore the page file and start testing for errors. Also of course make sure the computer is virus free. What type of video card is it? Shared memory or dedicated? Make sure the video drivers are up to date.

Oh and almost forgot, make sure the BIOS is up to date.
