The April 2008 issue of (IN)SECURE Magazine has an interesting article on certifications: The effectiveness of industry certifications (pp.27-30). The author raises some interesting points about certifications being used as marketing for companies, such as Cisco, for promoting their products, and as a good way for people to promote their knowledge or experience in areas of learning not covered by their academic degree(s).

The previous company that owned the datacenter I work at had an advertised "Certs per center" stat on their marketing material. Must have worked, they got bought out by my company and made a boatload of money.
Treat people as if they were what they ought to be, and you help them become what they are capable of being.
