What IOS Should I Use

I passed my CCNA test way back in 2000. My career took a turn which required me to focus more on Microsoft environments and I haven't used my Cisco knowledge for over 6 years. I came into possession of a Cisco Catalyst 3548, Catalyst 3524, and a Cisco 3800mc router. I want to prepare for my CCNP and would like to use these devices for my lab. What IOS is suitable to run for these devices? They currently have 12.0 but I want these machines to have the latest software so that I can prepare for the test. Should I upgrade them all to the latest release, upgrade to an older, or keep the IOS 12.0?

You'll want to get 12.4 on your router.
Did you mean you've got a MC3810?
Chances are that you'll need to get newer equipment. -

Yes, I do mean MC3810. So 12.4 will run on my equipment? Why do you say I will need newer equipment? What won't I be able to do?
