multiple degree's

jamesleecolemanjamesleecoleman Member Posts: 1,899 ■■■■■□□□□□
Alright so I'm talking about this on the military side (i'm not in).
I thought I would ask here too because there's more computer related people here.

So would it benefit me to get multiple degree's
I already know what I want and that is a degree in Network Administration
but there are.....
Eight more classes and then I would have a degree in computer programming
and while on my third year at Grand Rapids Community College I can take
summer and fall classes for programming while taking the transfer classes
to Davenport University. I just have to wait one semester before I can
get the programming degree.

I've always enjoyed networking since I did cisco stuff in highschool (three years or more back)
and in programming, I've just started to enjoy it because it has that
"I made it and it's mine" kind of feel to it even though we started with qbasic
and its a requirement to get the Network Administration Associates Degree.
The Associates in Network Administration will cover material from
Comptia Network + / and Linux + :) but I'm still studying so when
I get to the class I'll know a few things.

Comptia A+ material is in a computer serviceing class to transfer.

Both are Associates of Arts degree's so I can transfer them to
Davenport University. Also if I pass a class then I can take it over for free
as many times as I want...just wanted to add that in there.

Now at Davenport University I will get my Bachelors in

Network Administration (pick one ccna/ccnp/security +/mcse/ mcsa* - part of major)

There are about at most to fifteen classes between Network Administration and these two:

Network Security
or
Biometric Security

Then I hope to goto GVSU (Grand Valley State University) for foreign language.
I figure everyone could use a translator lol but really I also like to be able to
communicate with people in different languages. I have tried to study alot of
different languages by myself so I can get a feel of which ones are difficult.
I'm thinking about Spanish, Russian, and German so far.

Now I just want to be set to the point where I would maybe have a better chance of being
hired. I know that foreign language will be awsome help but I figure
Network Security will help me with Network Administration because they work with each other, right? Biometric Security looks interesting and plus if the Networking doesn't work then
I guess that I could have success with Biometric's. Then maybe I would get paid more
instead of the company that I'm working for trying to find another person and pay them
more money when they can just have one.

I've already covered with another person how they wouldn't hire me because it looks like that
I wanted to stay in school because it was easy. School isn't easy for me and the place that I
work at is easy I just want to kinda clear that up. I also told them that I wanted to make sure
that I have success in life and that I'm paying for college myself. Yes I know things will happen where I won't get a job. I explained to the person to look at the course catalog and that it would show that I'm willing to take advantage of an opportunity that is presented to me. I also like to learn about things because I value knowledge alot more than money. I also think its best for me not to always stay with technology but to also learn something else such as foreign language or mountaineering (sounds kinda fun). I don't know why but I guess I'm that kind of person. I know some people will be like...why did you get four or five degree's instead of a masters and I honestly won't know what to tell them but Bruce Lee once said, "Be formless like water." Water is just about limitless.... so why set a limit on myself? icon_eek.gif < I love this face :)
sorry if it's kind of a rant. I just got in the mood to write which doesn't really happen alot
Booya!!

There is def nothing wrong with having several degree's - it will just put you into alot of debt unless you pay upfront! Some of the things you have mentioned are excellent skill sets - programming, networking, security, foreign languages. All will look great on a cv and will give you great skills.

For me you have to decide what you want to do sooner rather than later because if you specialise in these are's then you'll most probably find that you wont touch other area's as much. i.e. if you specialise in security then there is a vast array of area's within this which you can then go further into and are unlikely to use much programming, and the same applies to other topics you've mentioned.

Also if you do all this you have to weigh up the costs? time, money, effort etc. From what your saying it sounds like its gona take a loooooooooooong time to do. Most people i know who have learnt a foreign language has had to move to that country to "master" it properly.

If it were me and i wanted to specialise in networking for example i would rather have a masters in this field than several degree's from a non related field.IMO. Once you achieved your "specialised" degree you could then extend your skillset into other area's - there is no harm at all.

I don't think I will be in soo much debt to where I wont be able to get out of it.
Yea, it'll take me along time but I think the associates in networking and programming
while on the way to the bachelors for networking will be alright and I should be able to pay off the Davenport off quickly. Then I'll just take part time classes for the other degree's and the foreign language. I do want to goto different countries like Europe and Asia and get more experience with the languages there and I hope a company will allow me the opportunity to.
