Happy Birthday Ethernet!
On this day in 1973, Robert Metcalfe circulated a memo outlining a rough schematic of how Ethernet should work. Metcalfe was working at XEROX PARC at the time, but he later went on to found 3Com.

Ethernet wishes that as ubiquitous as it is, it wasn't brought to its knees by a loop or a bad vtp update...
it requires some careful configuration to work right, but when it works right it is great.
In other words, it's kind of like Windows.
