OSPF and costs for E1 and E2

Is E2 enabled by default so less processing is taken up by not calculating the cost of the area as well as the AS cost like is done in E1?

No, this processing is negligible. In most cases network admins are more interested in manipulating which interface is used to exit the AS rather than worrying about how external traffic is routed through their local AS.Anyway if E1 was default you'd ask the same about E2, they had to pick one.
Networking, sometimes i love it, mostly i hate it.Its all about the $$$$
