Hi, I am ready to start studying for the security+ exam, and would like some recommendations for independent study materials. I understand 2 different sources are desirable? It seems like i've read alot of good things here about the syngress book. I understand there will be a new version of the security+ later this year, but I should be able to study and pass the exam before that time comes.
I took and passed the A+ core test a few years back, but I never took the second part of the test, and now it's too late- i'd have to go back and take both exams again. This time I don't intend on fooling around- I plan to study straight through and pass the security+
Any advice/suggestions are appreciated.

nanga Member Posts: 201Would suggest going through the Sybex book. Although it is not a sufficient resource but yes the concepts are put up in that book. U can always do more search on google or wiki. Be sure to know all the popular port numbers...it helps.

mr_midnight Member Posts: 5 ■□□□□□□□□□Thanks to you guys for your advices - I have tenatively chosen my study materials, and will proceed on with the order, unless someone posts with serious issues about my choices.
My choices are:
Security+ Study Guide (2nd edition, syngress)
http://www.amazon.com/Security%2B-Study-Guide-Ido-Dubrawsky/dp/1597491535/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212185892&sr=1-9
and
CompTIA Security+ Certification Kit (sybex, 200
includes CompTIA Security+ Study Guide, Third Edition, covering all exam objectives in a systematic approach; Security Administrator Street Smarts: A Real World Guide to CompTIA Security+ Skills, with key information and practice organized around the actual scenarios you'll face in the field; and Security+Fast Pass, a concise review tool.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470285923/ref=pe_5050_7768920_pe_snp_923
Initially I was going to get the exam cram 2 to supplement the syngress guide, but the fast pass included with the security+ certification kit looks to cover that, and has the other 2 books in addition.
Any thoughts/advices appreciated, and if my choices seem solid, I will go ahead with the order.
Thanks! -
Dclown Member Posts: 27 ■□□□□□□□□□I used the Sybex & Exam Cram I just like Exam Crams mainly because the book itself touched on most points for me & the Adaptive mode i the way the review/test prep is set up. Got me where i needed to be. More or less skimmed the actual Sybex Sec+ book, went through the Exam Cram. & used both FastPass & Exam cram for review.
Not sure if that helps, but GOOD LUCK whichever route you choose. -
mr_midnight Member Posts: 5 ■□□□□□□□□□Hmm, I wonder how the fast pass compares to the exam cram 2 ??
I could always go with The Ultimate Security+ Certification Exam Cram 2 Study Kit
http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Security%2B-Certification-Study-SYO-101/dp/078973155X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212199547&sr=8-3
Instead of the CompTIA Security+ Certification Kit
http://www.amazon.com/CompTIA-Security%2B-Certification-Michael-Pastore/dp/0470285923/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212199547&sr=8-1
But the syngress guide is set in stone- so that much is figured out. Someone give opinions! I'm ready to get these bought and get started -
Dclown Member Posts: 27 ■□□□□□□□□□That is what i was speaking of. I didnt add the 2 to the end of it. But yea. they also have that Exam force training / Test prep i was reffering to.
Hope to see a PASS from you soon
