In the world? I assume we're talking consumer grade here, it would have to be someone in Japan - 1Gbps internet is not uncommon there.

    Where I live (Vancouver, Canada) it's Novus Entertainment @ 50Mbps up/down.

I believe Verizon's FIOS is the king in the US for now, but Comcast is coming out with some pretty impressive (and pricey) connections:

Like astorrs said, we can't compete with places that have high population densities, such as Japan and Korea. Their connections are insane.

Its def Verizon for the US. To bad Japan spanks us on a daily basic on ISP speeds.

They have about half of our population packed into an island than has less area than California, and most of the people reside in the cities. Running fibre is much more economically feasible when you have that kind of population density.

For example, my apartment consists of three floors with four apartments per floor. There's actually a total of only 11 since one space is the laundry/storage room. I'd guess there's about 16 people in this building. The entire campus has identical buildings. What do you think something comparable in Japan would be? I'll go out on a limb and guess that they'd probably have 5-10 as many people in the same amount of area, maybe more. Which area do you think will have a better ROI on a fibre run?

You may not have as fast of an internet connection, but you're also not getting packed into trains either. There's always a trade-off.

$150 for 5mbps up? What a ripoff... Can you just imagine paying $150 for your internet and still not being able to upload something to your family, friends, etc. at not even 1MB/sec? Ridiculous!
