So we all know that a designated port is a port that is in the forwarding state.

Would that mean that a nondesignated port is a port that is in blocking? or can a nondesignated port be something like a root port as well?

Yes, the non-designated port will be blocking because the port it is connecting to would have the higher priority BPDU

First you need to separate terms in two groups. Role of the port in spanning tree topology and actual status of the port. These roles and status can vary based on which spanning tree flavor are you running.
For example "Root port (role) is forwarding frames (status), designated port (role) is forwarding frames (status).
