Old Cisco Switches

I was wondering if anyone knew of a quick and easy way to compare old and new Cisco equipment. I am mainly curious since I have decided to build my own lab and have noticed that the switches I am used to using in the Net Acad are pretty high priced. Are there older or different alternatives? Mainly, besides port density are all 3500 and 2900 series switches made relatively equal?
Now I am really not concerned if it runs CatOS only because I actually like CatOS and do plan on getting at least one CatOS switch.
