I've been eyeing the $999 MacBook. Looks tasty, and I've wanted to learn Mac OSX. :)

This also looks like a nice machine.

I'm mainly looking for something cheap, under $1000. I'd mostly be using it for VMware labs, gaming(making a con for the MacBook, right?), and misc. work.

I'm currently using a Toshiba Satellite 1805-S204 which has been faithful since I got it back in 2001. I've had it break down numerous times, but I was always able to repair it. I think it's time to replace.

    A really good site for reading up on laptops is http://www.notebookreview.com/

    As for a gaming laptop, I'd go for either a Asus or Compal laptop, they tend to make really good ones. I'd stay away from Apple, there was a article about macs not to long ago http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=12590 . As for learning OSX, its nothing special and it gets annoying as hell closing windows on the left hand side, unless you're a leftie.

    1530 XPS laptop is a nice laptop also, I tend not to recommend the Dell route but they did a good job on designing it.

    I'd try to find a ATI based laptop also, they had a low heat tolerance problem with Geforce GPUs not to long ago http://www.dailytech.com/NVIDIA+Predicts+Weaker+Earnings+Due+to+Defective+GPUs+Warns+of+Lower+Sales/article12268.htm but they said its fixed with the newer gen GPUs, so you'll need decide if you want to take a chance or not http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=12434

    I personally dislike Acer and Asus notebooks and prefer HP, Lenovo, MSI ... also Dell, Toshiba should be fine (or if your budget is not limited, try a Sony Vaio);
    my own is a cheap, 17" MSI, powered by linux, ofc ;)

    I've always used Asus motherboards and laptops and had greater than expected results. I can't recommend one to you because I'm not sure which models they sell under $1k, but I wanted to share my experience since you're looking.
