Welcome to the dual-front warfare in the cyber-age: http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1670

There's no going back from this for mankind, unless a few nukes EMP everything electronic in existence. Then it's stone knives versus pointed sticks again.

Actually, that sounds kinda nice...

I didn't see where the country of Russia was performing cyber warfare. Can't believe they would title it like that. That's like having a botnet started by a hacker in America start a DDOS on Australia's government website, then posting an article with a headline "America declares war on Australia!".

    Retarded.

I bet they went ahead with the strongest possible cyber attack they could perform for a real good test to see how breaking communications would work for them in a "real war".

Crazy the things people think about in the middle of death. Just like how the US tried to pick the most dense spot in Japan to drop the bomb so they could see the results of the explosion.

The article states that the cyber warfare is being conducted by an organized crime syndiate, the Russian Business Network, not the Russian government itself. However, the RBN may have contractors for hire by anyone. It could also be from a misplaced sense of patriotism.

Or as Bashir in the movie Ocean's 11 called it, a Pinch. But without the actually nuclear warhead and subsequent explosion.

This happened before, I can't remember the name of the country offhand but they were taking down a russian war memorial and came under heavy cyber attack from sources within Russia itself. Of course the Russian govt. denied involvement. China seems to be ahead of the game in this regard too with more subtle attacks for both diplomatic and commercial gain. Don't be surprised, if the US isn't doing this already (and they likely are and just haven't been called on it) then it's only because they're behind the times not because it isn't an effective battleground. Modern warfare is all about destroying your opponents ability to make war, what better way than to cripple their infrastructure remotely?
We responded to the Year 2000 issue with "Y2K" solutions...isn't this the kind of thinking that got us into trouble in the first place?

The internet warfare broke out on April 27th, [2007] amid a furious row between Estonia and Russia over the removal of a Soviet war monument from the centre of the capital, Tallinn, to a military cemetery (pictured below). The move sparked rioting and looting by several thousand protesters from Estonia's large population of ethnic Russians, who tend to see the statue as a cherished memorial to wartime sacrifice. Estonians mostly see it rather as a symbol of a hated foreign occupation. …

It's sounds more like a pen test rather than a pre-attack attempt.

Russia-Georgia conflict created a big headache for Israel which armed and trained Georgians for years - and now suddenly Russians threaten retaliation by supplying S-300 SAM batteries to Syria. Here is what a prominent Israeli analyst says: http://samsonblinded.org/blog/on-russia-georgia-and-israel.htm

Israel's air force already leveled a suspected nuclear facility in Syria, so I don't think a few mobile SAM launchers will be too much of a problem.
