IP Address on 2950 Switch

wbosherwbosher Member Posts: 422
I have three 2950 switches at work to play with, and want to set up STP and some VLANS. The problem is I only have one PC!! Is there any way to assign IP address to switchports to simulate PC's?? I read somewhere that this can be done on a Router using the no keepalive command, just wondering if something similar can be done on a switch.

Cheers.

    You can not assign IP addresses to the ethernet interfaces of the 2950 so even if you turned off the keep alives you wouldn't have an addressed interface to do any sort of testing with.

    2950 is a Layer2 switche, does not support assigning IP's to ports. Layer 3 Switches such as the 3550 or better supports turning each port into a routed port which you can assign IP addresses too.
    There is no place like 127.0.0.1

    Oh well, looks like I'll have to invest in some PC's. icon_sad.gif

    2500 routers would be cheaper and you can use them for other things in your lab.

    I live in New Zealand, getting my hands on cheap second hand Routers is near impossible. Most people who have this equipment are hanging on to it or charging through the roof for it. I can probably buy 10 ancient PC's for the price of a Router. I saw a 1900 series switch go for $70 about four months ago!!! icon_mad.gif

    The 2500 routers are cheaper than $70 on ebay (not sure about the cost of international shipping though).

    Yeah, that's the problem. The shipping cost puts most gear on ebay out of reach in this part of the world.

    What a unique concept! :)icon_wink.gif
    I usually hang out on 224.0.0.10 (FF02::A) and 224.0.0.5 (FF02::5) when I'm in a non-proprietary mood.
