Core switches - Stacked
laidbackfreak
slightly outside the CCNA but I'm curious to know if I do an IOS upgrade on a set of swtiches that are in a stack, Can I apply the update to the master only ??
Or do I need to apply the update to each member of the stack individually ???
off to trawl the cisco site for further reading......

Whatever image is on the master will be pushed to the other switches. So, if you add a switch with a new version of code it will be downgraded. Conversely, if you update the image on the master, it will push the new image to all the other switches.
You have to be careful though, you don't want to make too big of a jump because different IOS versions may have different versions of stacking code and you could run into problems.

On another note, it's best to set the priority of the master switch to a higher value than the other switches. That way in case of a restart you can be sure it comes up as master again and your stack doesn't get out of order, etc...
