I have a redhat server that hosts dns. My server is hosted on a XEN server and the Xen file got curupted. I was able to restore the file and get it back up and running. However, the email service seemed very slow when booting and DNS didn't start. So I went to check DNS so I did a tail and I got the following...

Couldn't open PID file /var/run/named/named.pid Permission denied

I checked the permissions and this is what happened.

drwxrwx--- 2 smmsp smmsp 4096 May 16 2007 named

Weird how the mail que user owns the named folder and the pid after the rebuild.

I changed the owner/group and changed the permissions and everything seems to be working again...

Very weird.
