Number of bits

Could you explain to me in a easy way how to figure it out?
I have 5000 hosts and 47 servers and routers. I want to provide for future growth, what is the optimal number of bits to use for my subnetting task?

Well, 12 bits will give you 4094 (usable), so you will have to use 13 to satisfy your current requirements. 13 will give you 8190 (usable), which will allow for a decent amount of growth. However, you'll need to determine how much you're going to grow. You may need to use 14, 15, or more, depending on your needs.
