Fully Routed vs Non-Routed

I was wondering, in basic terms what the difference is, and the benefits/disadvantages of each? I can't seem to get my head around it and this MS press book isn't much cop to be honest.

I could see fully routed costing more because it would likely require more bandwidth, more or better equipment, and more time to administer because of the additional complexity. Fully routed could potentially be less secure as well. If you have a site with sensitive data, you'll have to be more vigilant than you would if only the sites that needed to access it could. It just comes down to finding a balance between cost, security, convenience, performance, etc.
