The free vmware version (vmware server) is overkill for a laptop ..

    I would suggest

Virtual PC does what it says on the tin .. its just 32 MB and works great ...

It has one downside though : You can get a 64 Bit version but it still doesn't run 64 Bit guests.

    You'll want VMware Server: http://www.vmware.com/products/server/

    Edit: Too slow icon_sad.gif

Actually, you might want to check out VirtualBox as well: http://www.virtualbox.org/ I'd probably go with that if I was you (and you don't need 64-bit guests).

You mean you cannot logon ?

In vmware it is CTRL-ALT-INS and Virtual PC it is right-ALTGR and DELETE once you clicked into the console window.

64-bit guests work just fine under VirtualBox now.

Oh yea, look at that. Version 2 in early September. They still call it an x86 virtualization package in the first paragraph; I just assumed nothing changed. Thanks for the update.
