Quick ITIL Question

One of the training provider websites seemed to be implying that training was compulsory if you wanted to sit the exam (as with the VMware qualifications) while the official ITIL site doesn't say anything about it.
Do you have to go through official (and pricey) training or can you self study and just pay for the exam?

From previous discussions, it has become aware to me that self studying the Foundations is not all that difficult. ITIL:F is one of my goals for the first half of 2009. My plans are to use the CBT Nuggets and buy one of the Foundation books off of Amazon and then take the exam.
