Couldnt resist telling you guys this....There's this guy in my company who "achieved" his MCSE in 5 months. Well, yesterday, as luck would have it, it was late in the afternoon and it was only him, me and another guy in our area. The company's IT Infrastructure manager, the IT Security Specialist and some departmental manager walked up. They were looking for someone that could add an email address for the departmental manager (she got married, her name changed and she wanted her email to be with the changed name while also getting emails sent to the other address, you get the picture, right?).

After greetings were exchanged, the IT manager asks me if I do it for her. I said I'd love to but I didnt have sufficient permissions to add email addresses. He goes, who does? And I point towards the "MCSE", since he was the only one amongst the 3 of us who had the rights. God, I wish I had a camera so I could have shown you guys what he looked like then. So the manager very politely asks him to do the required. He also apologised that he didnt ring up the service desk first and since he was just passing by and decided to come directly to us. Well, the "MCSE" starts bumbling, shaking and his skin colour changed from a deep red to a pale yellow in seconds. I could see his hands shakiing, I felt very sorry for him. To top it off, he said to the manager that the server was not responding. At this the manager said, you mean that the exchange server is not responding? "MCSE" says yes. And the manager goes, I'll have this looked into. O boy, you should have seen the "MCSE's" face...

I didnt laugh in front of him, but I went outside and had a good laugh. This was the same guy that boasted in front of so many others that he got a score of 950+ on the 291. This was when I told him that I scraped by with a 700 after 3 months of effort.

What goes around, comes around. Eh?

A job was logged and someone capable enough did it in under a minute.

I am quite suprised at the candidness with which he admits using illicit material. The other day he passed his ISA server test and openly said that the test was very easy since most questions were from his question bank. So you can imagine what the question bank is.

Usually I laugh such things off, but sometimes it angers me. I spend 2-3 months preparing for a test and these people do all 7 in 6 months and move up the ladder and rub it in by taunting me. But the good thing is I know what I do and dont have to stutter and stammer when someone asks me to do something. I dont turn red and green with embarrasment. But I dont let it bother me, I just do my job, study my head off and keep chipping away at those certs.

    950+ on the 291!

When/if I pass that exam I'll be happy with 700, 701 or anything that enables me to pass. The pride will be so good, unlike the false satisfaction that 'MCSE' has.

I don't know much about Exchange, but isn't that all done in Active Directory anyhow? Add another email address in exchange options in ADUC?

It certainly sounds like this guy doesnt know his stuff and I agree that people who do not study and use braindumps have a negative impact on the rest of us.....but with that being said I would like to point out that referencing someones timetable as an absolute indicator of his study methods is not accurate. I have attained all of my certs in less than a year and I would be saddened if someone assumed that I used illegal materials to do so. Everyone learns at a different rate and some (though rare) can absorb information at an amazing rate.

I go to school with a guy who was a teller at a bank and IT wasnt even a hobby of his and he has obtained all the same certs that I have in 5 months shorter time. Because we are both studying for the same exams I seek his input when I get in a troubling spot and the guy almost always has an answer for me. As you can see from my signature I was moving much slower before he came along, but he has actually become an example for me and a motivational reference. If someone just looked at how quick he has passed his exams they might assume that he is obtaining certifications in a unethical manner. But he failed his 291 on his first attempt and barely passed his 293 by the slimmest of margins..... he doesn't ace them, but has consistently scored in the range of 800 on his A+ exams, Net+, 270 and 290.

The guy is like a sponge. I envy his ability to learn. I have to put in many more hours a week than he does just to keep up, and it would be easy to discredit his results just because he does it with so much less effort than I do. I instead choose to be impressed with his learning ability and challenge myself to do better.

I don't think this guy has much defense since it seems apparent that he uses ****. However, just as a general rule, an MCSE does not equal a master of all things Microsoft. I have an MCSE, and I know next to nothing about Exchange. I probably could have figured this specific task out in 30 seconds, but I think that is still a valid point.

People like that really annoy me. It's not the fact that he didn't know, that could be understandable if he's never used exchange. It's the fact that

    A) He brags about his MSCE (and thinks he knows it all, when he doesn't)
    and
    B) He didn't even TRY (he just made an excuse)

Those are two of my pet peeves. A 30 sec google search and he would have found instructions. I'm a one man IT department at my work, so I constantly have to google and find things out on my own if I don't know them. It's just part of how you learn.

For the record, Yes you go into ADUC and to the properties of the person's profile.

EDIT: OK, at least that's how it's done with exchange 2003. Figures they would change it in 2007. Thanks Royal.

When you have Exchange 2003 installed ,there's an e-mail addresses tab in ADUC and you can add an e-mail address there. In Exchange 2007, you have to go to the Exchange Management Console and go to a specific part within the console to add an e-mail address there. So as you said, the Exchange stuff has nothing to do with the MCSE unless you do it as an elective.

Microsoft completely removed Exchange management from AD management tools with Exchange 2007. But if they had Exchange 2003, he should've at least been able to take a look at ADUC and see e-mail addresses tab.

But still, what he was asked of was an Exchange task, not necessarily an AD task. But still should have been easy enough to figure out.

    lol that is awesome.

when he asked to get the email changed I would have said "Yeah help him out or is that question and answer not burnt into your brain?"
