What is a GBIC?

Anyone know what a GBIC is for? elaborate on what it does , it's purpose?

    A GBIC basically allows different types of media to be used in a port. Swap them in or out depending on what kind of media goes on that port -- so you have a switch with 16 GBIC slots, you connect either copper or some variety of fiber to the port...the GBIC is the middleman.

Cisco GBICs can be interchanged on a wide variety of Cisco products and can be intermixed in combinations of 1000BASE-T, 1000BASE-SX, 1000BASE-LX/LH, 1000BASE-ZX, or 1000BASE-CWDM interfaces on a port-by-port basis."

    These also known has Fiber Patches? They different or they the same? if not, whats the difference?

    The fiber patch cords would plug into the appropriate GBIC module (or SFP module depending on how new the equipment is).
