L2TP vs. GRE

Hey guys, trying to determine what exactly the difference between these two protocols. I know from studying ISCW that you can use GRE to create tunnels between two routers. Can you use L2TP as well or is it mostly use from PC to endpoint? Does this give you the added PPP protocol functionality between the routers?
