Layer3 2950 / 3550 models & images

With the 3550, can you just load the EMI IOS on it and it will switch from a L2 SMI to a L3 EMI ? I thought it was a $1k kit from Cisco ?

I've read the 2950 can be layer 3 if it has EI hardware and not SI hardware.
- Is a 2950G/T/C the EI hardware ?
- How would you know when buying it off ebay ?

3550 can be upgraded from IP Base (SMI) to IP Services (EMI) with just a software change. It costs money to get that piece of paper to say you're licensed.

No. A 2950 is not a layer 3 device. EI gives you QoS, ACL and a few other features. You can't upgrade a SI 2950 to EI.
