Your CCNA Lab questions
cellophanecore
I am setting up the 2501 lab shown in your CCNA lab. The problem I am having is the computer (HostA) that I am using to connect the E0 to the NIC doesn't show there to be a connection between them to; however, I do have a console connection.
I looked on the Ethernet Transceivers and the link light is not on, should it be?
What should the gateway on the HostA be set on?
What TFTP server do you suggest using in a Windows XP OS?

1. If you use the proper cable (cross-over) and everything is turned on and properly connected: yes, the link light should be on.
2. The default gateway should be the first router interface on its path, that is, the router interface closest to that host, the interface the host is connected to. Remember this: the default gateway is ALWAYS on the same subnet.
3. This is the only one I ever used:
ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/utilbin/win32/3cdv2r10.zip
(there is also a subnet calculator and a syslog deamon in the win32 folder:
ftp://ftp.3com.com/pub/utilbin/win32/
)

That must be it then, I am not using a cross over cable. I didn't think you needed one to connect to a router to PC, is it because your using a the AUI adapter?. What else can the AUI port be used for?
Webmaster
It is because you are connecting the host directly to the router (similar to host-to-host) while normally, there would be a switch or hub in between as routers are basically used to interconnect networks, not just single hosts.
The AUI connector is a left-over from the past, from the time 'Ethernet' was 10Base5 (and 10Base2). Check out the 10base5 section in
www.techexams.net/technotes/networkplus/mediatopo.shtml
for the cable and connectors that would be used to connect the router to a 10base5 network.
