does anyone know how to reinstall windows installer for XP? i had caught one of the many windows viruses out there i was able to remove it now i'm trying to fix what it messed up .. systems restore doesn't work

mesage reads:
windows installer service could not be accessed. this can occur if your running in safe mode or if the windows installer was not installed correctly. contact help

its just a chat thread i followed it and theres no dl or descripes any fix

in place upgrade if you dont mind reinstalling SP1 and other fixes...

Windows XP - The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed
This document provides a solution to a problem where the Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.

SYMPTOM
When attempting to install software on Windows XP the end-user receives a message that "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in a safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
SOLUTION
To resolve this perform the following:

1. Click on Start
2. Select Run.
3. In the "Open:" field, type: command.
4. Click OK.

An MS-DOS Prompt window will come up on the screen with a blinking cursor at the command line. In this window you will need to do the following:

1. Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter.
2. Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter.

i've done thesfc earlier today and restored a buch of file and i've done the unregister and re register and it hasn't fixed it my only thought is to unistall the service pack if it lets me and install sp1 and all the patches to it.. if that fails well, well , well, dff
