Catalyst 2950 Console problem

Hello all,

I'm new here, and i sneak around the forum and i'm surprised with so many expert people.

I started my studies for CCENT, also making a lab.

I've got 1 2950-24 i just recently received and tested and worked fine the console and the ports I made password recovery. And the serial configuration it's different from normal speed:115200, 8, none, 1, none.
Now i where practising switchport port-security everything fine, from nothing i couldn't write commands like the switch were freeze the leds ok, unplug, plug.

When i plug i see all the boot passing, it seams everything ok. except the bold red part:

But it doesn't respond to my commands, even if i close and reopen the Tera term, putty or hyper. Doesn't do anything, I tried with router and other switch and works fine, I even trade the switch console port from another switch and its the same. Another thing I've notice when i press keys at the sometimes the windows from programs get odd, doesn't work fine and i can't use the com again until i reset the computers (I've also tried with several computers.) I can't remember or find anything on the web :\

I'm thinking the board is broken and sending incorrect voltage to the serial port?

Can someone give me ideas or help me.

Thanks for your time,

Regards,
Bruno Lucas

Somebody set ROMMON to load c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-6.EA2c.bin but it can't find it so it loads the first file it can find which is c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-22.EA12.bin instead.

    Do "unset BAUD" from ROMMON.

Not sure where you got the idea about incorrect voltages. There are many different reasons including software why it doesn't work.

Are you using a USB->Serial adapter or a built in serial port in the computer?

    Hello tiersten,

Well all the computers I've tried was with the rs232 port not usb adapter.
The other several tries were always computers with COM port.
I have around 5 original console Cisco cables and some new, and its the same, the other Cisco switch and routers i have works fine, but with the normal speed (thanks for the tip "unset BAUD").

I think its not normal, because I was working with fine, and from nothing Rx stop working since I can see all the data from boot and when I send info nothing changes on the screen. (I hope not, that's why I need help).

Also tried to stop the boot to enter in ROMMON, but ignores it.

    Thanks,

After i search for the same kind of problems i found out this site.

    Repairing Cisco serial console.

I contact a friend Electronic Eng. and he checked the catalyst confirmed that the chip was burned. He got the component and changed, a perfect job. It's working perfectly.

PS: unset BAUD just work after i putted the
    commands flash_init and boot_helper.

I just want to share this info.

Weird. I've never seen a dead console port before due to the RS232 transceiver dying. RS232 transceivers are usually fairly robust but the part used in the 2950 doesn't seem to have very much ESD protection. Shorting the pins together won't damage it but at some point it got fried by static.

Good to hear that you got it fixed however.

I work with a lot kind computers and some POS and i already saw some RS232 burned more commonly with Multi bank pad's (don't know if this is the correct name).

Also the Eng. said to me the chip were only making 15 Ohm's (burned).
I don't understand much of electronic, but i know ohm's its resistance :).

I used to do embedded development and RS232 serial was king for that. I've never killed a serial port if it had a decent transceiver with ESD protection built in like the Maxim series or included in the circuit. The transceiver used in the 2950 doesn't have built in ESD protection and relies on the manufacturer to include it in the circuit which Cisco didn't do.

It means the transceiver shorted out due to ESD damage.
