how to find sniffers

I've searched about the possibility of sniffing yahoo messenger messages and I've found a lot of utility that can monitor messenger conversation in a network. Now can anyone tell me how do I know if someone's really listening or how can I prevent it. Thanks in advance.

yea setup a personal xmpp server(openfire?) there's lots out there you cnalso use OTR along with it. ....if the sniffer was on a SPAN port your out of luck....best thing is to crypt your traffic...you can also use hamachi...anohter personal favorite....kung hinde patay ka :P

finding sniffer?

yea, this was also my favorite question when i was taking an IPS/VM course,
the amazing thing is that the answer is quite easy yet difficult - depends who run the detection tool, and what kind of sniffing/interception act the sniffer do.

so, there will be one way left - which is the prevention action before the sniffer doing the thing. google around, there are many of them with different approaches, and leads only to only a few mechanism - which is as qp81 said, ipsec could be one of the option.
