How they do it

Ok so I've been on a media kick lately and have decided to tackle my audio and video collection into some sort of media server instead of a giant network share mess. I've been looking over many products (netgear NAS, Linksys NAS, Windows Home Server, Apple TV) and so far nothing that impressing. So I decided to code my own which is fine. Got NAS up and running with all the services that I need except I can't find a way to stream video and audio to clients on my network. I have seen that on the software that linksys has their web panel on the NAS has a flash application (I think) that allows you to stream video or audio to any client with any browser on the network....my question is how are they doing that.....
I've been looking for a library or api to build such a media server from scratch and I can't seem to find anything....any have suggestions or products that they use that they are happy with?

I have gnump3d running which does what I want but downloads the whole file before playing instead of streaming....and their source code is a mess.....
