Custom "New Item" in WSS 3.0 List

In a document library I would normally just create a new content type and add it, but it does not seem to work this way in a list...
I have created a modified version of NewForm.aspx and named it NewForm2.aspx. How can I get this modified version to be the default content type? I have tried renaming and it does not work. I have tried copying the original code into notpad and modifying the NewForm.aspx but than I get both versions of the form. I want the user to go to NewForm2.aspx when they click "new" in the list.
Any ideas?

Solved:
Here is what I did. I added the modified web part and then set the original webpart to hidden. It seems like the first new item I created seemed to not have the workflow attached to it. I went throught he workflow settings again and then it seemed to be fine. All is working properly.
