Doesn't surprise me, the first thing that usually goes when it comes to budgets is redundancy...

The reasoning is, why pay for 2 when 1 gets the job done.... Of course, we are the first to be blamed when a system does go down.

We had this problem here, the company holding our contract refused to replace people that quit so we had to consolidate responsibilities over the past two years. Eventually things that were only done monthly became forgotten about.

I'm not shocked either. It's a simple equation - you get what you pay for. You pay less, you get less. If you get rid of backups and additional personnel, then you're SOL in an emergency. Hopefully the din of folks screaming about down time will be loud enough for the higher ups to hear and to try to expand those budgets a bit...otherwise, they'll lose customers and their reputation in the long run.
