Unknowingly configured domain as NetBIOS?

I've just started to realize (possibly) that my domain controller has been communicating to the clients in my domain (EAD.local) through NetBIOS. I discovered this when I checked "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" under the WINS tab in Advanced TCP/IP Settings, and was suddenly unable to access the shared files on my domain controller from one of my clients, which still remained a part of the domain btw. I've been successfully able to add all my 3 client computers to my EAD.local domain, but can only access files via My Network Places. However, I've been told that if I'm accessing the domain controller via My Network Places on a client computer, that I'm using NetBIOS. The domain controller named itself so it was backwards compatible with NetBIOS by default, so I didn't mess with it. I'm wondering if I need to change the name of the domain controller? I shouldn't have to set an IP address for the WINS server if I don't want to use NetBIOS, I believe. And since I only have XP Pro and Vista Ultimate clients in my domain EAD.local, NetBIOS shouldn't matter since it's only used for older OSes.

Thanks for any tips!
