USB's went out on Laptop

brad-brad- Member Posts: 1,218
So one of our users had all the USB's on a laptop go out the other day. Its about a 5 year old dell w/ XPsp3, and the touchpad mouse still works, but none of the usb ports do. They dont even give power to the devices, but i can see them allocated in the device manager.

Since its out of warranty, i assume i'll just have to get a new one...that is of course unless anyone has seen this before and has an idea that i dont. Any thoughts before i have to order a replacement?

I have several old Dell Latitude laptops where one or both USB ports have stopped working. With one good port, I use a USB hub. The ones that have all bad ports had electrical problems that probably blew out the USB controller. USB is a powered bus and that sort of thing can happen. But people playing around in their BIOS settings can also accidentally disable the USB controller, or uninstall the USB controller in Windows Device Manager, so check for those things first.
