Being in the UK, I'm not 100% sure what "American National Standards Institute" really is.

ANSI is linked to ISO compliance. Each country has a group like that so getting accreditated is basically saying that it meets all standards for ISO compliance. -

James, they may not ring a bell with you right off the bat, but you use some of their standards on a regular basis I am sure.
ASCII Text any one? I believe they even had a hand in helping develop some standards for XML... -
