VLAN Trunking - VTP Questions

I am trying to configure the two 2950's I just got to perform VLAN Trunking, as I am out of the gate slowly into ICND2, but starting to have some questions that I can't seem to find the answers on.

Ones a 2950-48 and a 2950T which both are using IOS 12.1 (not sure if this would matter, but wanted to include as much info as possible)

My questions are...

1. (Most importantly) why is the VTP trunking operational mode not trunking on both switches? What configuration am I missing?

2. Every time I configure one of the VLAN's on SW2 for no shutdown, it brings the VLAN interface up, but shuts down the another. Why is this?

    First you need to figure out why your trunk isn't working. With the 2950s they should just form a trunk with no configuration at all.

    Second, you are not creating VLANs when you create the SVI. They are separate and you still need to create the vlan in either vlan database or in global config mode. Not sure if you knew that, but I see a lot of people confused by this.

    The 2950 is a L2 only switch so it can only have one SVI up at a time that is why when you no shut one it shuts the other. The only reason the switch needs the SVI is for an IP address to manage it.

    Create some vlans in global config mode, and then check your trunk and vtp status
    i.e.
    (config)vlan 5
    (config)vlan 6....

    This is what I thought, so in theory... I could default the switches and attach a straight thru cable to port 1 on each switch and it should be trunking?

    That is really confusing, you're right. I created the VLANs on SW2, but made it a client. Should I reverse them to SW1, since it is acting as the Server, or does that even matter?

    That probably doesn't help I guess. However I created all those VLANS in global configuration mode.

    To be honest I have not clue what you mean by "when I created the SVI", what is it and how did I create it? I just learned some about vlan database mode, but not very familiar with it.

    SVI = Switched Virtual Interface, more commonly known as Vlan interface. That is what you are creating when you do:
    switch(config)#interface vlan 2
    
    That is not creating the Vlan. To create the Vlan you need to do the following:

    switch(config)#vlan 2
    
    Or you can just add an interface to that Vlan (not an SVI, an access port) and it will be created automatically depending on the platform.


    Notice there is no "interface" in there. For the trunks give us the output of "show interface f0/1 switchport".

    Yeah, your problem is two fold -

    #1 Your trunk isn't coming up.

    #2 You're creating vlans on the client, not the server.

    I suspect that if you can get that trunk up, you'll find out why using VTP in anything other than transparent mode in a production network is a bad idea

    Switch to switch == crossover cable...straight cable wont work....

    Can you give us a show ip int brief?? I bet they are down.

    I feel like a dunce now!

    I had a crossover cable attached originally, but it wasn't working and the PORT LED's weren't lighting up, so I thought I might have the wrong type cable attached. So, I made a straight-thru for it to test it. Unfortunately it would have never worked, even if the configuration was right!

    I will plug the store bought crossover cable back in when I get home before trying the other suggestions.

    I hate to point out the obvious, but if the store bought crossover still doesn't link up, check the obvious on both switches and make sure the ports aren't shutdown. I don't see any no shut commands issued in the config you posted, but whether that's because you didn't issue them or just omitted them I can't tell

    The crossover cable is in ports 1 on each switch now and I have issued the no shutdown command on the interfaces, but they both show a down/down status?

    When it didn't do what was expected, I kept on adding to the configuration and then I was eventually and totally lost!

    As far as the crossover cable... and some additional information on cabling....

    I have my cable modem attached to port 24 and my pc to 17, all is good and I'm able to surf the internet... I have a laptop connected to port 11 and it's able to surf the web and the lines are up. I put the same type crossover cable on port 1 of each switch to trunk and get nada, no lights or nothing...

    I didn't do any configuration on those ports, don't see why I would need to configure a no shutdown command on Fa0/1, and I have... but still nothing icon_sad.gif

    I even moved port 11 to port one (same type cable) and it comes right up, so I assume the port is functioning ok.

    OK, VTP is not your trunking protocol and does not provide trunking between your switches. VTP, although it is named "VLAN Trunking Protocol" is actually just Cisco's proprietary VLAN management protocol. As mentioned previously, you're better off
    placing both (all) of your switches in transparent mode and leaving them that way until you get a better handle on what trunking is and what VLANs are.

    Your trunking protocol on a 2950 (any flavor) is 802.1Q. Cisco's proprietary ISL trunking protocol is available on many of the other Cisco switches but is slowly being phased out.
    Your 2950s will uses 802.1Q (and only 802.1q) by default when you connect the swtiches back-to-back using a crossover cable on any of the available fastethernet interfaces. I would suggest setting "switchport mode trunk" on your trunk interfaces anyway.

    WOW! what you enter the command "INTERFACE VLAN 2", for example, your are NOT creating a VLAN. You are creating a virtual interface that is capable of interacting directly with VLAN2, if it exists, on your switch. The "virtual interfaces" on a layer 2 switch (which your 2950 happen to be) are limited to only one (meaning only one can exist and be active at any one time), are only there and used for management purposes so that the admin can telnet, etcetera to the switches for doing configuration updates etc.

    To create a VLAN on your switches (as mentioned previously), you go to global configuration mode and enter "VLAN 2" to create VLAN2. Obviously this will work for VLANs 4, 5, 6, 7, etc. also. Also, if you just assigned a non-existent VLAN to an interface, the switch will create the VLAN for you.

    The VLAN DATABASE command is being phased out an you probably shouldn't be using it since I don't believe it will be tested.




    Now, with only your two 2950 switches you will not be able to communicate BETWEEN VLANs on you switches. Meaning for example that VLAN 2 will not be able to communicate with VLAN 3 either on the same switch or accross the trunk you'll be configuring. You should be able to communication from VLAN 2 to VLAN 2 and VLAN 3 to VLAN 3 from switch to switch accross your trunk and this should prove that your trunk is working.

    What does "the same type crossover cable" mean? The cables used to connect your laptops and your cable modem to the switch are a straight-through cable.

    You are correct. All switchports(interfaces) are turned on and active by default. If this was a either a new switch or an "erase startup-config" or "write erase" was performed on it then this would be the case. BTW, this is the exact opposite of a router where all interfaces are SHUTDOWN by default.

    Remember that for your cabling, unlike devices (DCD-DTE) use a straight-through cable and like devices(DCE-DCE or DTE-DTE) use a cross-over cable ( 1, 2 - 3,6). PCS, Servers, routers, cable modems, etc. are like devices(DTE). Switches, hubs, repeaters, and bridges are like devices. (DCE)
