can a windows pc have a local logon password AND a domain password? in other words, can it be set up to have a user log on locally as well as to a domain, or only one or the other? is it possible that a user will logon to the local machine with a password, then logon to a domain with a password?

Yes you can have both, One for logging into the Local PC & the other to log onto the domain.

You logon to either the local machine, or the domain. You can't do both at once.

so if you have a laptop that you logon to locally when not connected to a network (or when connected to a workgroup), but also use to log onto a domain, how would this be accomplished?

After you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, you select or type your usename and password. Then click on advanced, and select either local, or domain.

thanks. also... if you already have a local account, but are going to add the laptop to a domain, what configuration needs to be done to the laptop in order to do this?

Under system properties, click on Network Identification. It will say something like,....to join this copmuter to a domain, clcik here. You must have the rights to join to the domain, along with username and password setup within domain.
