I have a question about being over qualified.

Let say that someone who has no I.T real world commercial experience did a MCSE or a CCNA or a high end certification. Then they apply for a entry level positions level like help desk level 1 job will they be considered over qualified and not get hired because of that fact because all MCSE or CCNA jobs require at least 2 to 3 years of industrial experience.

No, there are Help Desk jobs that want you to have an MCSE icon_rolleyes.gif HR is not very knowledge on what is really needed for a position.

    Good question.
Does the 2-3 years experience actually mean 2-3 years of say actual helpdesk experience or can 2-3 years of non IT experience count in some way ?

From experience I would say yes. I have seen many instances where people from non IT departments were brought in to a low level position in IT where their company experience was very usefull in the IT department.

Say for instance, you had years of experience in a finance department then that knowledge would be very useful on a helpdesk providing support to other finance departments as you know their language and the potential impacts to them of the calls they may log. If you were to have an interest in IT and want to move into IT support then it's a win win scenario for both you and the IT department.

If you were a senior manager, it may prove tricky though as the IT management might feel intimidated if you were to move into a staffing role.
    Kam.

I was turned down for a 12 pound an hour contract cos I had 2nd line skills. and all they needed was a 1st line person. I mean who cares what you have to do to earn a living. even now after 14 IT positions I would never turn down 1st line if it was paying enough. so why do they want to pay some fool with only 1st line experience 12 quid an hour is beyond me

Because they know someone can (and most likely will) bolt for bigger and better things the first chance they get. Someone with less of a skill set is more likely to stay and grow in the position.

That is why I was almost passed over for my current job. My Cisco skillset doesn't align very well with my line of work so my bosses had an initial concern that I'd leave for something that aligns better.
