Loop troubleshooting

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot a loop or see if one really exists. I started at a new company and there seems to be some slowness issues. This morning I tried to do a ping for a test and received a message back that the TTL expired in transit. Any debugging I should be doing to figure this out? Any help would be great.

If you are getting TTL expired it may be getting routed back and forth between two devices. The traceroute should show you where.

If your switches are locking up you can unplug each IDF link until it returns to normal to isolate it in the building...well thats assuming its in one building/area.

Thats the redneck way our network team does it.

show port statistics and see if any ports are reporting excessive traffic and/or spanning-tree issues. making a diagram helps too.
