Just quick question which may have been answered already somewhere here on the forum but can you purchase a Cisco IOS without actually having a cisco product. I would like to get simulation environment going but I know I will need the IOS to plugin. Then of course the next question is how much ? Thanks in advance

No. You need a device that is still in support to get a support contract.

Get yourself one of the routers that are supported by dynamips and use it. That way you have a "valid" IOS that you can use. Dynamips supports IOS images from: Cisco 2691 Cisco 3640 Cisco 3725 and Cisco. You can find more information here.
