The only way I ever find the time out of non-dedicated learning -- learn whatever is interesting at the moment -- to learning a specific, regimented knowledge is to set a date. It is a powerful motivator to have a realistic date to study for because everyone has other demands in one's life, and without a deadline, which of course can be changed, the priority to study always remains low or self-motivated.

Once however your skin is already in the game (money paid for the exam), it is a powerful motivator to spend your time towards a single goal as opposed to general learning or non-learning activities. The other means is to never be afraid of taking on new responsibilities with the knowledge what you know and what you need to learn. If that means learning a new skill, as long as the boss realizes where you are at, you get the opportunity to learn live.

Typically the demands for a new technology in a business is different than one that is already exists. Most businesses expect challenges with new technology, and solving the challenges is how is you gain typically expert knowledge.

Setting a date and putting your money down is certainly a motivator. Then again if you are needed at home sometimes you need to let that pre paid rack session slide a little. Life gets in the way sometimes but yes you need some milestones for sure. More often you will hit them than miss them if they are there.

Good advice on the boss, the secret is self promotion there. Sell it to him so he buys into it and gives you the room to grow.
