Updating IOS on WS-C2924-XL-EN

I have a 2924 switch and I decided to update the IOS to version "c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC9a.tar" the upload to the switch via tftp went fine and uploaded succesfully. however right after I uploaded it I issued the "reload" command and forgot to issue the "boot system flash" command. Now my switch can't find the IOS that I have installed. What can I do? I did the "dir flash:" command and found that my IOS is still compress as a .tar file, whats the deal with that? Shouldn't it be a .bin. Any help would be appreciated.

you should have untarred the file. Tar is a unix specification for grouping multiple files in a single file or on a single medium. (TAR Tape ARchive). Inside of the tar file you would have found the bin file and probably some documentation to go along with it. You can use winzip (www.winzip.com) to get the files out. You need to go through the recovery procedures for uploading the ios via xmodem now.
