"Delayed Write Error" on external hard drive

I recently bought a 1 TB Iomega external hd that uses a usb interface. When I was downloading Google Chrome to it I recieved a "Delayed Write Error" message. I did select "Optimize for performance" option to enable write caching. Do external hd's simply not like write caching or should look at getting a replacement?
I should note that around the same time the event occurred I received this warning under event viewer:
"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging operation." event id: 51
I don't have a page file on my external hard drive but I do have it on two of my internal drives, so perhaps pagefile may be the source of the problem?
