I need a Cisco Phone that supports SIP? CP-3911? CP-7912G?

Hi, I recently bought what was supposed to be a new ATA186. I read that it supported SIP and SCCP. Hours later and a 100 mile drive later, I found out that it supports only SCCP and to make matters worse you would need a software engineering degree to change it's locked firmware.

So they are refunding my money. They are trying to sell me on a CP-3911 or a CP-7912G now. So I thought I would ask here first. Do these support SCCP AND SIP? Are there versions that support one or the other? I just want something simple I can plug in using SIP protocol, not SCCP and not have to screw around with trying to hack firmware, brick your device and void your warranty.

Thanks for the advice!

I've only heard of the 3911 as a SIP phone.

To use the older 7912G with SIP you have to do a firmware update (unless they already did it for you).

There is a good voip wiki site-

    voip-info.org - voip-info.org

It's mainly focused at the Asterisk PBX and SIP but still contains some excellent real world info - worth a look. I used it when I was converting some 7940s to sip.
