What do you have on D: - just file data ? or open files/running programs?

In the past , I've used GPARTED to shrink partitions, but that does require rebooting the system to perform the partition operations.
Is your disk a 'basic' or 'dynamic' Windows disk?

Other possibilities might be to move the data to external USB disk , then delete & recreate the D: partition/volume within Windows, then move the data back to it..

And, to state the obvious, whatever you do ... backup it all up before you do it :)

You can do this without a reboot. Disk management is probably the easiest.

The most straightforward method is to just backup the data, delete and recreate the partition, and restore the data. This is assuming there are no system related files on the D-drive.
