Is there a way to tell what image it is using by the show version command? Or does it have to be a C, T or G model? Here are the results.

So you cannot upgrade from SI to EI if you get an SI early on....I was looking at the specs just tonite on SI and EI and I'd rather go with EI... -

I have 3 WS-C2950-12s and I was able to just download the EI image and throw it on from a TFTP server so I could use the cryptology features...just went to the cisco site and downloaded it. -

Nope. Sure doesn't. -

The standard and enhanced 2950s use the same images. As astorrs said the hardware determines whether the enhanced features are activated. -

There are crypto & non-crypto versions with/without the web stuff.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -
spartangtr Member Posts: 111Running Standard Image means it an SI model.
There is no EI only software version. All the software is SI/EI -- and the 2950 model it's installed on determines whether you have the EI features or just the SI features.

Odd. When I first got mine it didn't have the cryptology features and I wanted them. When I downloaded the EI image(it was 2 seperate images on ciscos website) I had them. What would have changed to give me the crypto features? -

Most of the different 2950 models ( /T/G 12/24/48 port ) point to the same spot in the software tree -- and these are the current 4 options for any of the 2950 Access Layer Switches:C2950 EI AND SI IOS CRYPTO IMAGE

notgoing2fail Member Posts: 1,138I thought image and IOS were the same thing no?
What is the ".bin" file that I upload onto the flash? Is that the IOS or the image? -

notgoing2fail Member Posts: 1,138You can use them interchangeably and usually get away with it..... but the IOS Image is usually compressed within that IOS .bin file. But to most people that BIN file is the IOS image.
Ok got it.
I was bidding on a 3550 on eBay and wrote the seller a question. He mentioned that I can update the IOS but not physically update the image. So it confused the heck out of me... -

You can upgrade from SMI to EMI with the 3550.
You can't upgrade from SI to EI with the 2950. -
tiersten Member Posts: 4,505You can upgrade from SMI to EMI with the 3550.
L2 = SMI = IP Base
L3 = EMI = IP Services
