Average Wage?

Hey, Just got a question ive been wondering about.
What is a rough estimate of an average wage for a Net Admin/Tech?
Im going to school right now for a security specialist course. And when im done I should have my A+, Net+, Security+, Linux+, MCSE, CCNA, and I think a couple others. I have no idea how much money I can be expecting when I get out of school.

Well, if a car roughly goes 90 mph average, a net admin roughly makes $50,000. But as you know, a car can go 40mph or 120mph as well...

It really depends on a lot more than just the job title (i.e. the company, your experience/education, specific job tasks, location, etc.etc.).

Don't expect too much. Regardless of the certs you have, you'll have start at the bottom anyway. To get an indication which better fits your personal situation, you could try and check some jobs on job boards.

Thats true & thats exactly how I am thinking. How old are you? I would say average wage is $65,000 for an average network admin in an average job with an average attitute. You can make ALOT more though if you apply yourself.

That sounds good. Im 18 right now tho, Will be 19 when im out of school.
Theres a Bank here that is interested in hiring me part-time while im going to school. I have to phone them today after school. Should be good experience at least cause I imagine they have a fair sized network.

You could get some nice security-related experience there.

Definately take the bank job. From what I hear in the job market, employers want people with experience and getting your foot in the door seems to be the hardest part. I had several friends that had a degree and several certs under their belt and employers would not touch them with a 10' pole, because they did not have the experience. Employers seem to be selfish in that way icon_mad.gif . Lucky for me my boss is not one of those people, I did not have a degree, nor any official cert (Like COMPTIA A+), but I did have certs from the local Tech College (A+, NET+, MCSE, & CCNA). I applied for 15+ jobs in the area and all but one of them wanted experience. So to make this short, take any type of part-time, internship, or volunteer work just to get experience on your resume. That will make finding a permanent job much easier. BTW I started as a paid intern at $6.00/hr and after 2 years I am upto almost $30k including insurance and perks. But that is SC salary and you can do much better in other states like FL. My official title is "Senior Systems Tech" Hope that helps

Start at http://www.microsoft.com/learning/beginner/default.asp which links to this:

is an article about salaries. Looks better than what others have said - but remember that experience is a big part of any pay.

    Check it out.

    Huh? icon_confused.gif

You mean you completed courses that were similar to what is covered by the certs? If you have one of those certs, you have it... I didn't think there were official and unofficial ones. I was just confused. icon_wink.gif

Im assuming he meant like a Certificate from the school, stating something like, "Completion of the A+ Course at *School Here*"
Anyways, Thanks for all the info. And I start january at a credit union for a 3 month contract position. Theres a possability for a longer term position after that. I get paid $10.67 an hour, which isnt too bad since it should count towards my practicum at school. :)

congrats on starting out. I was lucky and got the first job i interviewed for. Alot of my old friends from back in school still have not found jobs. Funny thing is, they all had certs and i didnt. go figure.

They pay starting PC Techs about 40K and are able to advance to about 58K around here + there is usually alot of overtime cash. All the admin jobs have been filled for a while. My boss makes 89K as the 'THE' network admin, and the department boss make 135K.
