Resume Question

Hi all,

First off, I love this forum and review the CompTIA sections daily. Hoping to be a part of this wonderful community.

Currently, I'm studying for the Network+ and Security+ exams and will be preparing to go and find a job soon (I'm on parental leave, but will be entering the IT field). On my resume, I was a sub-contractor for an IT company where I did things like:
Hardware and software installation
Create and restore images
Onsite technical support
a. Computer Setups
b. Networking of computers
c. Diagnose and correct software or hardware issues
d. Create or edit PowerPoint presentations
Formatting hard drives

I did this job for over three years, but it was sporadic. I would work 2 months here, a few weeks there, a month or, so but this was continuous for nearly 4 years. Thus, do I put on my resume something along the lines of 2002 - 2006 or do I put something in brackets next to the dates? I don't want to deceive a potential employer but it is grunt IT work which should be represented on my resume.

Also, I was a full time law clerk for 3 years, but in the course of my duties I also was a technician, webmaster (and designer of the firm site) and consulted by the firm for IT networking and security advice. In title I was a law clerk, and was hired exclusively for that role, but over the years, as people realized I had technical experience I began to function as a law clerk/technician. How should I approach these transferable skills when writing up my resume?

Thanks for any information and guidance. :)

I think most people would put 2002-2006, which is not deceiving the employee because you did work for this company for those four years. You should also use the law clerk/Technician Title since a lot of your work at the law firm included Tech work.

    Thanks for your advice, Johnta20.

    Anyone else have a say?

Also, should I ask my former boss if I could get a reference from him, relating to my character and tech work? More than likely, IT companies could care less about my law clerk position, but should be interested in my networking, html and tech support experience there.

I agree with Johnta20 on the dates. It is not deceiving because you did those duties during that time period.

As for the Webmaster I would suggest putting it on your resume but only listing the technical skills used. You can label it Webmaster and then when it comes down to the interview you can explain the rest.

Yes you should ask your former boss if you can use him as a reference because not only is it polite but that way he won't be caught off guard when he receives a call.

You post those dates all over the place your resume is likely to be tossed to the trash. List it like everyone else is recommending.

Good luck it's tough out there.

Thanks for the suggestion, everyone. I'm assuming that if I get an interview I state then the fact that it was sporadic work and not full time (when the subject comes up)?

As well, in dealing with my law clerk position, should I bunch my title as Law Clerk/Technician/Webmaster, separate them into their own sections or remove Law Clerk outright? Since I will be going for technician/networking positions, webmaster could be removed as it wouldn't be much of a factor, but it does demonstrate html knowledge.

Thanks everyone for your continued advice! I GREATLY appreciate it!
