2950 autosense cable type?

OK, since ICND2 looks like it gets straight into VLANs & STP & all that, I'm rewiring my topology to get some hands-on practice with that; putting all my switches (1 linksys & 2 2950's) together.
I don't have any crossover cables at the moment - I really should get a couple, or the hardware to crimp my own, but that's another story.
The Linksys->S1 works (it's always worked - this link is part of my normal (non-lab) lan. I'm assuming it's because of the auto-sense capabilities in one or both switches. My S1->S2 link does NOT work however. I've tried different cables and different ports to rule out bad hardware, but nada. The LED over the appropriate ports isn't lighting up even, and I think that's suggesting layer 1 issue isn't it? I'm a bit confused by that. Any thoughts?
