Explain SPI of IPSec

When establishing an IPSec session it gives out (during the being of the Phase 1 and 2 (Main & Quick mode)) thats part of the SA (Security Association). The SPI, what is it and what does it do is it possible to make a comparison to something more well known like a similarity.
Also could any one lead me to a site that gives more simple description of IPSec, cause I'm having a heck of a time trying to understand it.

As far as making it simple...I am not sure if that is possible. IPSEC is a bit complex just by nature, but these 2 articles may help. -

SPI is just used to keep track of IPSec Policies and is used to determine which policy to apply.
The Wikipedia article is a good start. The MS exams don't require you to know the RFCs or anything. I'd focus on the main points that you commonly see, such as AH vs. ESP, tunnel vs. transport, and other common terminology. Definitely lab it up a bit.
