Thanks to hhisgett for the last prompt reply
I have just been going through my notes and realised I got Autoexec.Bat and User.Dat mixed up
User.Dat is the binary file that cannot be edited with a text editor such as Notepad. Can it be opened (if so, with what program?) and modified by those with the knowldege to do so?

User.dat is part of the registery. You can not directly edit the file. You would have to use Regedit to do so.
